Second degree sunburn didn't deter my first romance

Elbows propped on my desk I sat behind him and mooned throughout what was to have been biology class. Yes, indeed ... biology it was because as Mr. Marcellus pointed out and identified and mutilated dead things, my heart exploded.

He knew my name, I was sure of that, since roll call assured a daily speaking of my beloved's. And I knew his: didn't I write it about thousand times every day?

He was tall -- or was he? He was bronze, wasn't he? Wasn't he lyrical?

I don't think I really know if he was any of those things. To me he was Perfection -- end of lecture.

After Suzanne poisoned Mr. Marcellus with formaldehyde, biology wasn't as much fun as before. Things had changed.

By end of semester, my beloved, for whom I longed, drifted beyond my gaze. He was, after all, a senior, and it was an outrage to think that he would remember me at all.

The scorching 5th of July followed a spectacularly hot 4th as I, habitually seeking adventure/excitement/trouble, walked to the beach.

Fancy recollects it was a screeching of tires on pavement; wisdom dictates it was the sound of destiny calling.

In any case, it was my Love. And he had come for me. My virgin heart froze faster than a new bottle of ethel chloride will.

Five hours of direct tropical latitude sunshine left me gravely burned but radiant. We bonded that fateful day and fell deeply in love over time. I have never forgotten the humility of receiving the treasure of his love, nor understood the terror I found relinquishing mine.

One day he sailed away into the vast ocean that was the war in Vietnam ... and the sunset of first love fell.

I love him still. Go figure.
