Perfect, That's what it was.
I was on a theater trip to Tampa in my senior year of high school. We shared a bus with a couple other troupes. Among the crowd, I notice this one girl -- kinda loud and obnoxious, really, but sort of interesting. Once we arrived in Tampa, my friends and I wondered what to do with our free time. She recommended a daring raid to steal all the salt and pepper shakers we could find. I was hooked. She came up to me before one of the plays. Said she couldn't find her group, so could she sit with us -- with me? Of course. And during the play, we kissed for the first time. Not suddenly ... it was so glacial, our lips moving together exquisitely slowly. You couldn't have written a better scene. We were both virgins, so sex was a discovery for both of us. We made love for the first time on her senior prom night -- absolutely perfect. Storybook, even. For me, she was amazing ... this intelligent, strong woman with a clear sense of self who loved me. And I - I was a 17-year-old goob who had just gotten laid for the first time. After three months, she moved to Connecticut for school. Three weeks later, I broke up with her because I wanted to see other people. I broke up with her through a letter. Perfect. Time, distance and memory cloud over truth. In truth, we were just a high school couple who were each other's first loves. But it was perfect -- every touch, every discovery, every move was the first one. And no matter how hard I try, that's the standard of perfection I'm left with, the one I try to match in every relationship I'm in. Perfect.
