I first noticed her in my freshman geology class
A week passed, and she made the first move. I was walking out of the science building when she caught up to me and breathlessly asked how I knew so much about geology. I hadn't really paid too much attention to her in class because she was usually quiet and she dressed conservatively, kind of like a librarian or a school teacher. She looked like the studious type to me -- not wildly attractive -- yet if you looked at her carefully, she was pretty in a wholesome, midwestern way. Now I looked down into her face and her eyes held me captive. They were a soft light brown color and they seemed to reach inside me and pull my heart right out of my chest, while I just stared in amazement. I simply did not know what to say or do next because my heart had already made a promise to her eyes. We went to the Student Union for coffee and talked. Sandy told me about her previous loves and if I had had any I would have told her about mine. She drove me to her home for dinner that Sunday. I met her family and we had a great time together. They made me feel at home even though I came from New York, and most midwesterners think New Yorkers are either psychopaths or just plain dishonest. After dinner we went into the other room and watched TV ... and kissed for the first time. She smelled like a garden of sensuous flowers and I felt drunk and dizzy as her perfume filled my head. My heart began to rev up in my chest like a jet engine and desire went through me like a forest fire. I would do anything for her, just to be with her and possess her; just to have her possess me. Her mouth captured mine and I knew that her kisses had enslaved me until the end of time. We saw each other for the remainder of the fall semester. I was hopelessly and shamelessly in love with her. I could not wait to see her each day and studies were the farthest thing from my mind. In January, as the bitter cold of the Ohio winter left my face numb and my eyes teary, I could feel her begin to pull slowly away from me, and soon she told me it was over for us. Love had come to me as suddenly as summer lightning and now it was leaving just as quickly. Tears filled my eyes and I turned and walked away from her as quickly as I could, so that she would not see me crying. I never looked back her. In the years since, I have come to understand that love needs the right soil to grow. It needs the right time and the right place to be successful. She saw that freshman year was neither the time nor the place. She still wanted to do things and have experiences she could not have with me. She still had dreams and goals to achieve. So she left me and I eventually healed, but I have never forgotten her and the way I loved her, or the strength of that feeling. I have never loved another woman like that, and I have never forgotten her. I hope she has never forgotten me either.
